Scope and Professional Disclaimer

SteadyHand provides practical educational information, visual supports and everyday strategies for families supporting autistic children.

The aim is to make ideas easier to understand and use at home.

It is important, however, to be clear about what SteadyHand can — and cannot — provide.

What SteadyHand provides

SteadyHand may help you:

  • make routines and expectations clearer
  • introduce visual supports
  • break everyday tasks into smaller steps
  • support choices, communication and predictability
  • think through difficult everyday situations
  • adapt practical strategies to your family’s routines

The information shared here is general educational guidance.

It is not based on an individual assessment of your child.

SteadyHand does not replace professional support

SteadyHand does not provide:

  • medical diagnosis or treatment
  • psychological assessment or therapy
  • occupational therapy
  • speech and language therapy
  • behavioural or clinical treatment
  • nutritional or feeding advice
  • legal advice
  • individualised educational, therapeutic or medical recommendations

Using SteadyHand does not create a professional-client, therapist-client, doctor-patient or teacher-student relationship with the creator.

If your child is already working with professionals, their recommendations should be considered alongside what you use at home.

Every child is different

A strategy that helps one child may not help another.

Consider your child’s:

  • communication
  • understanding
  • sensory preferences
  • physical abilities
  • developmental level
  • environment
  • family routines

Start small, observe what happens and adjust.

If something appears to cause significant distress, discomfort or increased difficulty, stop and reconsider the approach rather than forcing it to continue.

When professional advice may be important

Please consider speaking with an appropriately qualified professional if you have concerns involving areas such as:

  • pain or possible medical problems
  • eating, drinking or swallowing
  • significant sleep difficulties
  • sudden changes in behaviour or ability
  • self-injury or serious safety concerns
  • severe or persistent distress
  • communication or developmental concerns that need assessment
  • difficulties that continue despite reasonable adjustments and support

If there is an immediate risk of serious harm or a medical emergency, contact your local emergency services or an appropriate urgent-care provider.

Use SteadyHand as a starting point

SteadyHand resources are designed to support thinking and everyday practice — not to provide a single correct answer.

Parents and caregivers remain responsible for deciding whether a strategy or resource is appropriate for their child and situation.

Use what helps.

Adapt what needs changing.

Seek additional support when the situation requires it.

Practical guidance should support good judgement — not replace it.

You do not need to know everything before you begin

SteadyHand is here to help you take one everyday situation at a time.

If you are looking for practical support rather than information about SteadyHand itself, you can go straight to the challenges you are working on.

Small steps. Practical support. Real everyday life.
