Token Boards & Reward Supports

Simple visual supports to help children understand what they are working for, stay with tasks, and experience success more clearly.

Overview

Token boards can be a helpful visual support when a child is learning to stay with a task, follow a routine, or work toward a clear and motivating reward.

This pack is designed to make motivation more visible and easier to understand. It helps children see what they are working for, how many tokens they need, and when they will reach their reward.

These supports are practical, flexible, and easy to use at home, in school, or in therapy settings.

Who It’s For

This resource may be helpful for:

  • children who need help staying with a task
  • children who benefit from clear and visual motivation
  • children learning to follow routines or complete activities
  • parents, teachers, and therapists who want a simple reward system
  • adults who want to build motivation in a clear and respectful way

How This Can Help

These supports can help children:

  • understand what they are working for
  • see progress more clearly
  • stay with tasks for longer
  • build confidence through success
  • experience routines and expectations in a more motivating way

The goal is not to pressure children into doing more than they can manage. The goal is to make effort, progress, and success easier to understand.

How to Start Using It

Start small.

Choose a reward the child enjoys and understands. Show the reward first so the child can clearly see what they are working for.

Then choose the board that matches the child’s current level:

  • start with the 3-token board for quicker success
  • use the 5-token board when the child is ready for a slightly longer goal
  • use the 10-token board when the child can already work toward a bigger goal

Name the task clearly, give one token at a time for effort or success, and count the tokens together.

You can use short phrases such as:

  • “First work, then reward.”
  • “You earned one token.”
  • “Two more to go.”
  • “All done. Reward time.”

Prompting Support

Start with the least amount of help the child needs.

You might begin with:

  • showing the reward first
  • pointing to the board and the token space
  • modelling placing the token
  • verbal prompting using short, clear phrases
  • light physical guidance only if needed

At first, some children may need more adult support to understand how the board works. Over time, reduce support as the child becomes more familiar with the system.

The aim is not perfect performance. The aim is helping the child experience success and understand the process.

Flexible Ways to Use It

You can use this resource in different ways depending on the child and the task:

  • start with fewer tokens and build up slowly
  • choose different token styles such as stars, smiley faces, or check marks
  • use different rewards depending on what is motivating that day
  • pair the board with routines, table tasks, transitions, or short work periods
  • use the reward choices page or add your own preferred reward visuals

This makes the token boards easier to personalise for different children and settings.

Format

This is a digital download.
No physical product will be shipped.

You can print the pages you need, laminate them if preferred, cut out the tokens and reward visuals, and reuse them over time.

One Step At A Time

Token boards do not need to start big.

Begin with a level that feels manageable for the child. Let success happen often at the beginning. Build slowly from there.

Small wins, repeated clearly, can build confidence over time.
